Exhibition: The Palette of Being

The Palette of Being
Five artists explore the diverse aspects of existence; including the animal kingdom, the built environment, cellular structure, abstract Figure & Landscape, and the Universe.
Exhibiting artists:
Julia Templeton
Julia Templeton adds layer upon layer of theory to her practice in order to exploit the information and infinite connections around the origin of matter. Her paintings arrive in beguiling forms that evade the surfaces they were created upon, and hum with mystery. The notion of looking into, rather than at a piece, is where her foremost intentions can be found.
Darren Duddy
Darren Duddy has lived and worked in Edinburgh all his life, drawing inspiration from his take on the ever changing city. From childhood, a nostalgic view of the past with a wary eye on the future, he documents and challenges a world changing from the familiar to the unfamiliar.
Tourists seldom see the new 'real Edinburgh' Darren captures through current news stories, song lyrics and personal experiences. In mundane scenes many may consider to be ugly or an eye sore, he reconsiders them through questions in paint.
Andy Mackie
Andy Mackie's latest work reflects a continuing passion for landscape, seascape and the figure. The collection also shows new collaborations with Edinburgh painter Derek McGuire and abstract artist Paul Keir on texture, collage and abstract composition. His love of travel is another important influence: travel feeds his love of colour, light, form and shape. Andy has visited Antarctica, the Arctic Circle and has circumnavigated the world by sea and rail. He has recently returned from a research trip to India, where he soaked up the rich culture of Rajasthan.
Alexa Thomson
Alexa Thomson collects. She has made collections since she was a child - keeping only what she sees as precious. Every object and its place and time of discovery is documented. Through these objects, and her process of collection, her resulting work is autobiographical, quirky and eccentric. Her work creates a beauty in drawings and paintings, bringing both a reverence and immortality that transcends the original object.
Julie Fleming
The visually pleasing has always been of interest to Julie Fleming. Beauty from the perimeters of our existence is the inspirational force in her work, the aesthetics of nature. Her new work reflects the beauty of the cosmos and beyond (previous work has included microscopic cell-structure as her inspiration). Through her use of a powerful palette of colours, she aims to create her own world - a unique beauty, teasingly ambiguous and abstract yet familiar.
