10 - 18 September 2011

Japanory – Stan Duncan

PREVIEW: FRIDAY 09 SEPTEMBER | 18:30 - 21:30

Stan Duncan is a 54 year old Scot. Originally from Ayr he is now domiciled in South Yorkshire. Stan was Senior Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Manchester until 2008, when early retirement provided the opportunity for him to engage more fully in his passion for photography.

These images of people caught napping in confined carriages of Japanese subway trains, benches in public parks and in city centre lottery booths have been printed in black and white. The rationale for choosing to exhibit these images in black and whites arose from Stan recalling a patient he met when working as a student psychiatric nurse in 1978 once saying, ‘Not everyone dreams in colour’.

The exhibition is entitled Japanory in the belief that every picture has an inherent narrative to which the viewer may relate.

This set of images was taken in the week preceding the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which produced widespread devastation over the north east coast of Japan on March 11 2011.

Going the Distance - Honeyb

This exhibition comprises of a compilation of images through a period of time. Each section represents a different experience in a controlled learning environment.

In 2006, huneyb attended a photographic course in Grazelema, Andalucia, in Spain. Photography became a passion, so she decided to pursue this pathway and achieved a high standard of work (A*) both in the GCSE and A level photographic courses (from 2007-2010), whilst still working as a nurse.

Each section of the exhibition represents a pocket of time within each subdivision of the coursework. Subjects projected in the exhibition are; landscape, light and form, abstract and identity. This will hopefully stir an array of opinions for you to discuss and share. This has lead to paid work and huneyb is in the process of setting up her own business with a website: huneybphotography.com.

Huneyb is now ‘Going the Distance’, to achieve a photography degree and hoping to start in March 2012 through an Open College of Arts (OCA) course (as well as the business venture). She has the motivation and enthusiasm to make this happen. She adds:

“This photography lark really gets under your skin. I see the world so differently now, a great cliché but true. I see so much more at every angle.

I hope you enjoy the exhibition ‘Going the Distance’ and understand my train of thought with the images I have chosen.”

All profit from this exhibition will go to www.actionforcharity.com/WomenVcancer as huneyb is participating in a 400km bike ride in Kenya to raise money for CANCER RESEARCH, such a great cause.
