Sophia Lindsay Burns

Dreams & Visions

10 – 18 December 2011

[Preview: Friday 09 December | 18:30 – 21:30]

This first solo exhibition of French artist Sophia Lindsay Burns in her native Scotland is a selection of works from 2011: landscape and scenes from the south of France & from Scotland. Also included are her latest figure paintings.

The common thread underlying her latest work is an original abstract approach to subject painting that involves overlapping continuous-line drawings on abstract backgrounds by using hyper-realist glazing techniques.

Her work has been shown in group & solo exhibitions, mainly in France, since 1994, and at various art fairs in the UK and France since 2010 (MacParis 2010/2011).

Bio &  current work

After graduating with honors in 1995 with her installation work from the Art School in Aix-en-Provence and concluding an art practice-led doctoral research in 2004 in Montréal, Sophia started to teach painting in the south of France. Here she pursued her practice as a painter with a focus on space and the language of abstraction, and her drawing practice for which she was commissioned on several collaborative projects creating illustrations and visual diaries for authors.

Sophia started to bring back subject to her work in 2008, that same year she saw the layered photographic and painterly work of Gerhard Richter at the National Gallery in Edinburgh, that made her realise that what she was looking for, was a way to intertwine drawing with abstract painting. This started two years of experimentation (2009-2010) with different types of layering techniques in oil and mixed media, to try and maintain the freshness and purity of her abstraction with the looseness and sharpness of her continuous-line drawings. This exhibition will be showing the latest results and experiments from this research.

This exhibition will include: A series of works from France, part of a council-commissioned project started in 2009 in the Languedoc region: Paroles de Salagoua lively depiction in drawings and paintings of villages and people from the Salagou valley;  Cityscapes & landscapes from Scotland: a series of small colorful paintings from quick city  & country sketches;  and the ethereal figure paintings from her latest collection, Healing dreams that will also be shown at Windsor & Paris Art Fairs this Autumn.
