After living, painting and teaching throughout the UK over the last 20 years, I moved back to Edinburgh in 2007. Like visiting an old acquaintance whom I lost contact, it rekindled images in my work I had not touched on since my student days. Georgian interiors filled with memories, friends and perhaps a little pathos.
My recent work has centred on the Georgian townhouse flat I live in Leith. I use it as a backdrop like a film location for events and memories to appear. The loss of my own father in 2009, lead to a series of re-imagined encounters with him in a place he never visited, through a series of small intimate drawings and paintings. There is never a pre-determined story; the narratives emerge as figures and locations are combined –like a revealing conversation.
