Exhibition: Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show - School of Art Preview Show

Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show -
School of Art Preview Show
07 – 22 May 2011
Titled “bi-degrees”, this exhibition is a chance to preview the painting, printmaking and sculpture work from BA and MFA students showing at this year’s Degree Show at Edinburgh College of Art in June 2011.
The preview show is intended to generate interest and publicity for the main show and to give a taste of some of the best work from this year’s ECA School of Art Graduate and Postgraduate students. Exhibitors were asked to submit a piece of work that won’t feature in their Degree Shows, but that they would like the opportunity to exhibit.
Exhibiting artists include;
Ronald Binnie
Through my painting, I hope to initiate both emotional and intellectual reactions and discussion about specific situations involving human and non-human species. The new work examines our relationship with and attitude to other primates and the implicit statement of relational power between observer and observed in the context of the zoo
Svetlana Kondakova
I paint characters from Greek mythology, adapting them in a way that describes people of today. The Greek Myths have remained relevant to this day as they depict archetypes rather than particular individuals – they reveal something universal about humanity.
Kate Livingstone
The continuous form of the circle symbolises perfection or paradise and can be seen as a representation of all life, from the structure of the universe to the structure of the atom. My work continually references the spiritual qualities of the natural world and its ability to inspire awe.
Scott McCracken
My work is concerned with the role of painting in a contemporary context, examining the way it is approached and the process of image making through the exploration of painting. This research manifests in various strategies, such as an interrogation of the formalist qualities of painting, exploring the nature of pictorial representation, and an interest in the materiality of the medium.
