CURiO - glimpse

01 – 16 October 2011

preview: friday 30 september | 18:30 – 21:30

Join us at the art’s complex on Saturday the 24 September to take part in our workshop. Create a new piece of work by adopting a painting and redoing it in your own style. Afterwards we will hang it as part of our exhibition which will be shown from the 30 September to the 16 October.

Bring anything you think might make an unloved piece of art beautiful. We'll supply some paint, collage material and markers. Adopt a piece of art for 5 pounds and it will be exhibited for two weeks in our show!

We asked ourselves what is the purpose of a painting if it is not an object for display? We all have art objects lying around, whether from fleeting pursuits or forgotten fashions.

While it may be considered blasphemous to paint over or alter another person’s art, we're adopting art that would have been thrown out and rescuing it to be reinvented and recycled. All of our artwork available for adoption has been given to us by Oxfam. The money you pay will go towards Oxfam and other charities. We see an opportunity to repurpose an image from a thing to be looked at and admired to a thing that is interactive, and is transformed into a positive opportunity for people to participate in art. It’s also an exercise in 'Found Object' art. Recycling and reinventing art reminds us of what Marcel Duchamp did when he painted a mustache on the Mona Lisa or signed a urinal. However, we are pulling our object through a contemporary filter by letting any member of the public, child or adult, create their own take on reinvented art.

People are used to being critical about art; instead we are giving people a chance to edit art. We are taking something unwanted and giving it a second lease on life. Anybody who would like to take part is welcome and we hope to see lots and lots of beautiful and curious new takes on abandoned art.glimpse.”

The Curio Gallery is an Edinburgh based Curatorial Gallery.

We are an artistic team of four young, creative, like-minded individuals who are trained in art and curating, and who create collaborations with other vibrant artists working in Edinburgh across all artistic mediums. We met while studying for our MSc.(s) at the University of Edinburgh, and recognised a shared desire to promote the work of Edinburgh-based arts. There are precious few outlets for artists to show their art and develop interest through community engagement and audience development. To change this we created CURiO Gallery, a curating project combining our knowledge of contemporary art and display with the work of Edinburgh artists to create ambitious collaborations that otherwise would have had no chance to be created within the traditional structure of the various art worlds.

We use our collective knowledge and experience of curating, display, and Contemporary art to produce ambitious exhibitions which showcase emerging artistic, talent ideas and theories. Using Emerging artistic practices we aim to bring a fresh, original and innovative approach to curating, showcasing the talents of the curators as well as the artists.

We aim to create a mutually beneficial relationship between ourselves, the artists, and the public by promoting the necessity of Contemporary art as a mechanism for exploring the wider public discourse and socio-cultural concerns. To create a meaningful interaction between art and the public, our exhibitions act as a spring board for educational and creative events open to the public. By creating an exhibition through collaboration and discussion we are able to develop our practice as well as the artist’s.
