Exhibition: Black White Score

Colin Lawson, John Brown & Lee Riley - Black White Score
Black White Score is an exhibition of work by three diverse artists; narrative painter John Brown, sound-artist Lee Riley and abstract painter Colin Lawson. Central to the exhibition are two large-scale graphic scores constructed by each painter in response to compositions by Lee Riley.
Riley’s electronic music manipulates and distorts sound to create an aural realm that is stark, metallic and at times claustrophobic. John Brown’s fragmented score relates Riley’s sound-scapes to the absurdities of daily life in blackboard like renderings of random clocks, equations, text, numbers and figures. Colin Lawson’s formal approach to painting connects to Riley’s processes of composition. The duration and weight of sounds are reflected in the measurement and surface texture of the paintings. Present also are two digital animations constructed from paintings by each artist which evolve slowly in response to Riley’s music.
The exhibition opens with a live performance by Lee Riley at the private view on April 15th.
John Brown and Colin Lawson currently live and work in Edinburgh as painters and lecturers of Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art.
Oxford based sound-artist Lee Riley is currently studying for an MA in Composition & Sonic Art.
